Ground to premiere at Brighton Festival
Ground will be making its premiere at Brighton Festival 2024, with 40 shows programmed between the 4th and 26th May.
Ground is a dining and performance experience connecting us closer to our roots, our food and each other. Part supper club, part theatre show, Ground seeks to decolonise the food on our plate.
Audiences will be invited to gather around a communal table for a culinary journey which uses locally-sourced produce to tell global stories about the food on our plate. Each course will unearth the tangled, sometimes hidden stories around everyday ingredients - from bread to bananas, and rice to cocoa - led by the voices of Indigenous and traditional knowledge holders across the globe, such as India, Canada, The United States and Ghana. It is hoped this intimate and meditative experience will encourage conversations across the dinner table between friends, families and strangers.
Ground is based on two years of extensive research, collaborating with Elders, academics, scientists and artists to understand the complexities of plant use and ownership. Notable collaborators include Farida Nabourema, the Togolese human rights activist and writer currently living in exile, Sutton King, Co-Founder of the Urban Indigenous Collective, and Dr Suman Sahai, an Indian activist and founder of Gene Campaign, a leading research and advocacy organisation for issues relating to food equity
The show is set against the Earthship Brighton, previously featured on Grand Designs. The sustainable building, which is constructed from waste car tyres and other recycled materials, uses the planet’s natural systems to provide its utilities. Produce grown within the grounds will be used for the 3-course meal, with a menu developed and prepared by Brighton chef Jethro Carr (Kitchen Academy).
